Details of Disappearance

Stevie Crawford was last seen by family or friends on July 11, 1963.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO), on the evening of 07/11/1963, the concealed body of a young boy was found in the mountains of the Ashland, OR. The boy’s body was discovered by a good samaritan some 58 years ago while fishing in the Keene Creek Reservoir along Highway 66. The unidentified two-year old boy was wrapped in multiple layers of blankets, bound with wire, and weighted down with iron molds to keep his body hidden. The young boy’s identity has remained a mystery since that evening.

JCSO took the case over in 1963, in which over the more than 58 year period, more than 23 JCSO Sheriff’s, detectives, deputies, Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) collectively worked together.

As the case went cold in August of 1963, the files had been archived and untouched for nearly 45 years. In 2007, a JCSO detective uncovered eleven paper boxes marked “old Sheriff cases.”  A special investigator was assigned to sort through the old material and follow up. During this time, the special investigator discovered a Keene Creek case which was possibly associated the unidentified 2 year old boys remains.

In August 2008, the boys body was exhumed from his resting place and a DNA sample was taken. This lead ultimately went cold as the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) returned no matches. In 2010, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) created a composite image using the extracted DNA.

In December 2020, JCSO received a Facebook Messenger tip on the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office – Oregon Facebook page. JCSO Sheriff then tasked the deputy Medical Examiner (ME) to continue the investigation by working alongside OSP’s Human Identification Program Coordinator. In this endeavor, a biological sample of the boy's body was submitted to generate investigative leads through DNA Phenotyping and Genetic Genealogy.

Upon the results, a search of open-source DNA repository (GEDMatch), found two potential siblings of the unidentified boy. An interview with a DNA-confirmed maternal half-brother was conducted, and revealed he had a young sibling with down syndrome who was born in New Mexico, and had went missing. Upon further investigation, a birth certificate was identified, and the 58 year old mystery of the Keene Creek boys body was identified as Stevie Crawford, born 10/02/960.
