About This Episode
The nearly four-month search for a missing Carleton Place man ended on May 12th, 2024 when he was found deceased.
Human remains pulled from the Mississippi River on the outskirts of town belonged to Mathew “Matt” McGrath — with his sister Melissa Rainville sharing the news by way of the Bring Mathew Home Facebook page on May 15th, 2024. The Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed the identity the same day.
Originally, police said the 52-year-old was last seen on Jan. 17th, 2024; however, the date changed after new and reliable information was received.
According to Rainville, it was a neighbour who saw her brother on Jan. 18th, 2024. McGrath was leaving his apartment near the intersection of Grant and Coleman streets.
McGrath’s autopsy, which was performed at The Ottawa Hospital, established “no signs of foul play,” OPP revealed. Additionally, it determined he had “been in the water since he disappeared.”
With foul play not suspected, no further information would be coming from police, OPP indicated.
The grief and shock Rainville feels over losing her only sibling has been compounded by what she said is a “lack of answers” surrounding McGrath’s disappearance and death.
“Mathew’s story is not finished, and I will continue to search for answers,” she expressed. “He would not throw himself into the river.”
